Technology

RS Operations, LLC provides a broad range of experience relating to selection, deployment and utilization of survey technologies.  In this section we provide a brief overview of some of these technologies.

Since RS Operations targets only older, archaeologically important shipwrecks, we base our planning upon use of 4 distinct but complementary technologies; This group of technologies represents the "core" of RS Operations survey planning.

Magnetometers

A magnetometer is a device that measures localized distortions in the earth’s magnetic field caused by the presence of ferrous material. It will only detect iron or steel.  Materials such.......................Read More

Side Scan Sonar

Side scan sonar is a method of underwater imaging using narrow beams of acoustic energy (sound) transmitted out to the side of the towfish and across the bottom. Sound is reflected back ............................Read More

Global Positioning Systems

The Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite network was originally created for military use so that airplanes, ships, and troops could determine their position using signals transmitted from a network .................Read More

Geographic Information Systems

A GIS or "Geographic Information System" is mapping software that links information about where things are with information about what things are like. Unlike with a paper map, where "what you see...................Read More

There are many other technologies available for use in submarine archaeological investigations.  New technologies such as laser line scanners, 3 dimensional acoustic profiling and others currently in development promise to greatly increase the efficiency, cost effectiveness and safety of underwater exploration.
